Author:John Flanagan

Characters:

"My name is Halt, I'm the ranger of this fief. My graying hair is often hidden from sight Halt.jpgby my gray and green mottled cloak with it's deep cowl. My temper may seem short, but hey I'm a short man. I may be old but I've the strength of a battle horse, yes we will get mounts later on. If you have questions great I'll answer them when it's time. I'm not an emotional man however I do respect a man who'd lay down their life for a comrade in danger, I owe my life to a manike that, I hope that my apprentice turns out like that. He should too..."

Setting:

In Ruin's of Gorlan we find ourselves entrance by the fictional, medievil, world of John Flanagan. With the dark dangers of the Mountains of Rain and Night rising up in jagged peaks. The peacful fief ruled by the baron in Redmont Castle, it's three towers rising sharply into the sky. The long grass in the plains swishing in the wind. While Halt's cottage lies by the surrounding forest that gives plenty of natural resources for Halt, Will, and the villagers. We find ourselves in one other important setting. The ruins of Gorlan, the crumbling remains of Morgarths Fief. There is no shortage of danger here with it crumbling houses and rocks strewn about.

This setting and climate effects Halt and Will everyday. Here are a few exsamples, without the forest they would not have any game to catch, with out the streams running through it there would be shortages of water, no fish to eat annd so on. without the long grass of the plains, men wouldn't get lost as easily, they would be more visable too. The climate and natural features are a big part of this story, and all other stories.

Confict:

"Hello, my name is WIll. My mentor was talking before. The recent events have been unsettling. However if you are so insistent I will tell you.

It started when my eyes met Halts, and then he handed the baron that piece of paper. I had to see that piece of paper. So that night after mulling it over I snuck into his office. I'm not saying it was easy but thats what I did. Anyways long story short, I did get to see the paper. It said that Halt wanted me. ME! I couldn't believe it yet, it was right in front of me. Then I realized what that meant, but it turned out for the best.

Then we went to work. He taught me knives (throwing mainly), the recurved bow, how to cook, Halt got me my first mount, taught me stealth, and many other thing. Now please see that this wasn't just I tried once or twice and I was a genius. No this was hours of dedication, many times when I was using the recurved bow and Halt would say 'that wasn't bad but you are far from mediocre'. I still don't know what mediocre is but I know it isn't good. Now I know people have been talking even though we made up months ago that Horace and I fought and they are right. However like I said we made up. I understand now too why he was being so arrogant. This fight however ended when the second big boar came charging out and i ended up being able to save him and then he helped me when the three guys that had been tormenting decided that the needed a second punching bag.
I then went to the ranger meet with Halt, thats when other trouble arose We learned of other killings, and who was behind them. the Kalkara. When Halt mentioned that the killings might be revenge based my mind went into over drive.
Anyways, after riding back to Castle Redmont and telling them everything. I realized that my teacher might be in trouble. I convinced them to let me go, it turned out for the best too. When we ran into the first Kalkara after it was obvious that they needed help I saw that glowing beacon of light, actually it was just a torch but 'glowing beacon of light' sounds cool. I dipped an arrow into the melting pitch and shot at the beast. with a flash of red light and the smell of burning hair the thing was gone.
After we saved Halt I was offered a spot in Battleschool. My dream of becoming a knight, to follow my father it was no longer just a daydream. It could take form in reality. I didn't though I was an apprentice to Halt. I would see this through to the end. Later that day I was explaining why being a knight meant so much, or had meant so much to me. Then halt told me, my father hand been a farm worker and a soldier he rescued my mentor. I learned my fathers name it was Daniel.
You insisted so I told you thanks for listening. Halt's right (big surprise there) talking does feel good."
